In Ohio, there are over 90,000 youth and young adults in transition that have serious emotional disturbances or serious mental illness. NAMI Ohio recently received a grant from the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services to better address the needs of these youth. The purpose of ENGAGE (Engaging The New Generation to Achieve Their Goals Through Empowerment) is to expand the system of care framework statewide targeting Ohio’s youth and young adults, ages 14-21 years, with serious emotional disturbances, including co-occurring disorders and multi-system needs. ENGAGE is led by two councils: the Youth and Young Adult Advisory Council and the Family Advisory Council. Council members provide guidance to the state regarding issues facing youth with mental health and co-occurring diagnosis and multi-system needs. Youth are encouraged to find out about ENGAGE activities by texting the message “ENGAGEOhio” to 89800.
